The Gut–Brain Axis: Why Brain Recovery Begins in the Gut At Agaia, we believe that the body does not function as a collection of separate parts.

For many years, medicine viewed the brain and the digestive system as two independent systems. If a person suffered from anxiety, depression, or difficulty concentrating, we looked for the cause exclusively in the brain. If they experienced bloating, gastritis, or irritable bowel syndrome, the focus was placed solely on the gut.

Today, science shows us something different.

The brain and the gut form one continuously communicating system. Information is constantly exchanged between them through the nervous system, the immune system, hormones, and the metabolites produced by our gut bacteria.

This is why, at Agaia, we never consider symptoms in isolation.

When a person suffers from chronic fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, disrupted sleep, or concentration problems, we almost always analyse the state of their digestion as well.

Because very often, the real cause can be found there.

The gut sends more information to the brain than the other way around

One of the most interesting facts is related to the vagus nerve.

It is the main “highway” connecting the brain with the internal organs.

Most people believe that the brain is constantly commanding the gut.

The reality is almost the opposite.

Approximately 80% of the nerve signals travelling along the vagus nerve move from the gut to the brain, while only around 20% travel in the opposite direction.

This means that the brain constantly receives information about:

• the condition of the intestinal lining;
• the movement of food;
• the available nutrients;
• inflammatory processes;
• the activity of the microbiome;
• the bacterial metabolites being produced.

In practice, the brain is constantly “listening” to what is happening in the gut.

When this information is unfavourable, it can affect mood, concentration, stress levels, sleep, and even the way we perceive the world around us.

The gut is much more than a digestive organ

The intestinal wall contains what is known as the enteric nervous system.

It contains approximately 500 million neurons and is often referred to as the “second brain”.

This system can independently control a large part of the digestive processes, without direct involvement from the brain.

Even more interestingly, this is where most of the serotonin in the body is produced — one of the most important chemical messengers involved in regulating mood, appetite, and sleep.

Of course, this does not mean that all the serotonin produced in the gut reaches the brain. However, a healthy gut provides the necessary environment and raw materials for all processes related to neurotransmitter synthesis to function properly.

When the intestinal barrier becomes compromised

One of the most important functions of the gut is to allow beneficial substances to pass through while keeping harmful ones out.

At Agaia, we often use the analogy of a properly functioning filter.

When this filter becomes damaged, bacterial components, toxins, and inflammatory molecules that should not reach the bloodstream can begin to pass through it.

One of the most extensively studied examples is lipopolysaccharide, or LPS — a component of the cell wall of certain bacteria.

Once it enters the bloodstream, it activates the immune system and may stimulate chronic low-grade inflammation.

A growing body of research shows an association between elevated LPS levels, neuroinflammation, and conditions such as depression, cognitive decline, and neurodegenerative diseases.

This is why restoring the intestinal barrier is one of the first steps in our protocols.

The microbiome — the body’s largest “biochemical factory”

Our gut bacteria do much more than participate in digestion.

They produce hundreds of biologically active substances.

These include:

• short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, acetate, and propionate;
• precursors of serotonin and dopamine;
• GABA;
• vitamins;
• various anti-inflammatory molecules.

Butyrate is particularly important.

It is the main source of energy for the cells of the large intestine, supports the integrity of the intestinal barrier, and has proven anti-inflammatory effects in both the gut and the nervous system.

When the microbiome is poor, the variety of these beneficial substances decreases.

This does not affect digestion alone.

It also affects the way the brain functions.

Stress does not affect only the mind

During chronic stress, the body increases its production of cortisol.

Prolonged elevated levels of this hormone can:

• increase intestinal permeability;
• alter the composition of the microbiome;
• intensify inflammation;
• reduce the quality of recovery.

This creates a vicious cycle.

Stress damages the gut.

A compromised gut sends even more stress signals to the brain.

The brain responds with even greater activation of the stress response system.

And the cycle begins again.

What does the scientific evidence show?

Today, there is substantial scientific evidence showing that disturbances in the gut environment may contribute to the development or worsening of various conditions.
