Oncology Treats the Tumour. But Who Takes Care of the Environment in Which It Lives?

When a person hears the diagnosis “cancer,” everything changes.

What follows may include laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, biopsies, genetic testing and cancer staging. A treatment plan is then prepared and may involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy or a combination of different approaches.

Modern oncology has reached an impressive level in identifying and targeting tumour cells. Alongside questions about the type and location of the tumour and the most appropriate therapy, however, there is another important question:

What kind of environment is this tumour living in?

A tumour never exists on its own. It develops within a body that breathes, eats, produces hormones, manages energy, regulates inflammation and carries out billions of biological processes every day.

This internal environment does not replace medical treatment, but it may influence the body’s ability to tolerate therapy, recover and maintain its natural defence mechanisms.

The Agaia Principle

At Agaia, we do not treat diagnoses. We work with the environment in which the body needs to function.

Imagine a plant. If the soil is poor, the water is contaminated, there is not enough light and the roots cannot absorb the nutrients they need, adding fertiliser alone will not solve every problem.

A similar principle applies to the human body.

Medical treatment targets the disease. At the same time, the body needs sufficient resources to tolerate the therapy, repair healthy tissues, support the immune system and create the most favourable possible conditions for recovery.

These are not two opposing strategies. They are two parts of the same approach to care.

The Metabolic Environment Is How Cells Communicate

Every cell in the human body continuously receives information. This information comes in the form of glucose, insulin, oxygen, amino acids, fatty acids, hormones, inflammatory molecules and nerve signals.

Through these signals, the cell understands whether it is time to grow, repair itself, defend itself or conserve resources.

When this system is disrupted, the entire body has to work harder. This may occur in cases of prolonged insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, inadequate nutrition, loss of muscle mass or impaired cellular energy production.

The problem does not affect only the diseased tissue. It affects every system that must continue to perform its normal functions while also coping with the demands of treatment.

The Body Is More Than the Tumour

During cancer treatment, the body faces an extremely demanding task. It must support the immune system, repair healthy cells, produce new blood cells and preserve as much muscle mass as possible.

At the same time, it must provide energy, regulate inflammatory processes and maintain the function of the liver, kidneys, intestines and other organs.

All of this requires significant resources.

The better the internal environment functions, the greater the body’s potential to perform these tasks. This does not mean that metabolic health treats cancer or replaces oncology treatment. It means that good overall health may support the body during treatment and recovery.

In recent years, a growing number of scientific publications have examined the relationship between insulin sensitivity, blood sugar, body composition, muscle mass, nutritional status and inflammation, on the one hand, and different aspects of cancer treatment, on the other.

Research suggests that a patient’s metabolic condition may be associated with treatment tolerance, quality of life and, in certain cases, prognosis. However, these findings do not replace or independently change standard oncology recommendations.

This is why, at Agaia, we do not speak about “alternative treatment.” We speak about creating the right conditions for the body to perform its functions as effectively as possible.

No therapy works outside the body. It works within it.

The Five Main Pillars of the Internal Environment

1. Metabolic Control

Stable blood sugar and good insulin sensitivity are not important only for people with diabetes.

They influence the way the body uses energy, regulates inflammation and manages recovery. Significant fluctuations in blood sugar and poor metabolic control may place additional pressure on a system that is already under considerable stress.

2. Preserving Muscle Mass

Muscles are not important only for movement. They are metabolically active tissue that stores amino acids, supports blood sugar regulation and participates in recovery.

For this reason, one of the important goals during treatment is not simply to maintain body weight. It is more important to preserve as much lean body mass as possible.

A person may maintain approximately the same weight while losing muscle and gaining fat. The number on the scale therefore does not provide a complete picture of the body’s condition.

3. Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

It is not enough for nutrients to be present in food. The body must also be able to digest and absorb them.

Nausea, changes in appetite, diarrhoea, constipation, inflammation of the mucous membranes and other treatment-related side effects may make eating and nutrient absorption more difficult.

Good digestive function is therefore the foundation on which many other recovery processes depend.

4. Inflammation Management

Short-term inflammation is a natural protective response. It helps the body deal with infections and tissue damage.

When inflammation continues for a long time, however, it may exhaust the body. Energy and nutritional resources are continually redirected towards the inflammatory process instead of being used for recovery and normal functioning.

The aim is not to “switch off” inflammation completely, but to support the best possible balance.

5. Mitochondria and Cellular Energy

Mitochondria are structures within cells that participate in energy production.

Almost every recovery process in the body requires energy, from rebuilding tissues to supporting the immune system and maintaining organ function.

When cellular energy production is impaired, the body has fewer resources available for recovery. This is why sleep, physical activity, nutritional status and overall metabolic health matter.

What Does This Mean in Practice?

At Agaia, we begin by assessing the internal environment rather than looking only at the diagnosis.

We consider the person as a whole.

How is their metabolism functioning? What is the condition of their muscle mass? Are there signs of impaired insulin sensitivity? How well are the digestive system and intestines working? Is chronic inflammation present? Is the body receiving enough protein, energy, vitamins and minerals?

Based on this assessment, an individual nutritional strategy, an appropriate movement programme and a plan for supporting the body may be developed.

All recommendations must be aligned with the medical treatment, the patient’s current condition and the instructions of the oncology team. During cancer treatment, even supplements, diets or major dietary changes that appear harmless may be unsuitable or may interact with the prescribed therapy.

The Bigger Picture

One of the most important changes in medicine over the coming years may not be related only to the discovery of another medication.

It may also come from a better understanding that the body is not simply a carrier of disease. It is an active participant in treatment and recovery.

The better its internal environment functions, the more opportunities the body has to tolerate therapy, repair its tissues and maintain its own defence mechanisms.

A tumour does not live in a vacuum. It lives within a person.

When we care for the whole person, we give the body a better opportunity to take an active role in its own recovery.

We cannot always choose the diagnosis. In many cases, however, we can influence the environment in which the body will undergo treatment and face the disease.

This is where a functional approach to health begins.
